South of Soho Fine Art and Custom Framing
"South of Soho Custom framing does an excellent job. We had an old family letter from 1924 that we wanted to preserve. Bob made recommendations about options and ended up building a beautiful custom frame that will preserve this heirloom for generations to come. It also generates attention every time someone comes over to visit by showcasing the letter and having a display case that is readable on both sides of the letter. A fabulous unique solution to a very special family piece.
Bob has also framed artwork for our living room and in other rooms throughout our house. We have been pleased every time both with the quality of work and the customer service."

This small business was formed in 2001. It was originally called Signature Lenses when the primary goal of the business was selling hand etched ophthalmic spectacle lens blanks. With time, other art mediums were introduced and though custom designed lighted shadow box frames were being produced by us for lenses, additional picture frames were needed for the new pieces of art to be sold. To accommodate any demand , an outside framing business was hired to provide for the additional need.
The business name changed to South of Soho after the incorporation of a fully capable custom framing shop in our home studio. We were not only selling art now but expanding our services by framing the personal items of our client base. After years of sub-contract work for another local framing business and gaining hundreds of hours of on the job training, in 2007 South of Soho officially launched itself into the market with a new mission as a custom picture framer.
South of Soho is one of only a couple local framing businesses that has a plan built around such a mobile service. Two important aspects of this method of doing business is how personal the service becomes for our clients by making it more convenient for them and our focused attention to their wants and needs. They don't have to juggle appointments, load the kids into the car and contend with traffic to get to a local frame shop, or wait in long lines behind other customers struggling to make a decision on how they want something framed. With this convenience, our clients also experience some wonderful savings by doing business with us. They are saving valuable time by eliminating their need to travel back and forth from home to a local framer and let's not forget the money they save by avoiding having to waste their ridiculously high priced gasoline getting there.
We continue to be in the business of selling our own artistic works but we are trying to open a new venue for other artists as well. In addition to being a local agent for Editions Limited, we are offering any interested artists an opportunity to display and possibly sell their art here.
South of Soho is family-owned and operated right here in Richmond, VA. While other companies may offer similar services, we strive to make ours the best, and it all comes with a very personal touch.
What do our clients think?
“Bob has drawn portraits of our boys when they were each aged four and a half. I sent him several photographs of our sons and he chose which to draw from. I was impressed at Bob’s ability to catch the children’s likeness—from a squashed little ear lobe to a beautiful, bright eye. I felt like our older son’s sweet shyness was reflected and our younger sons eagerness to face the world with a smile.”
